Trip to the Adirondacks

Last week, we had the pleasure of going to the Adirondacks for a few days. It was the first time my husband and I had been there. We went with my mom, step-dad and uncle who had all been before. When my mom and uncle were little, my grandparents would take them up there since it was where my grandmother grew up. That made it even more special since both of my grandparents passed away earlier this year. It almost felt as if they were with us. Their memory definitely was.

We stayed in a beautiful log cabin, which I will be sharing a full home tour of…in installments over the next few weeks, so as not to overwhelm you in one post! I took just shy of a bazillion photos, I think. Today, I wanted to share the personal side of our trip and the sights we saw. Still might be picture overload, but I hope you enjoy…

I took all of these photographs with my new Canon 5D Mark III (affiliate link*), and I recently splurged on some VSCO Film presets for Photoshop. I love using VSCO Cam on the phone, so I knew I would love using them with my SLR photos. I experimented with a couple of different film presets for these including black and white. I still have a lot to learn, but it is fun experimenting! 

The rental log home was in Lake Placid. Once we arrived, we were all in heaven. The place was not only huge, but completely up to date and filled with anything you could ever possibly need. Including toys! My kids were so happy.

We enjoyed meals together in the rustic dining room.

The porch of the cabin was so serene. I could definitely enjoy my morning cup of coffee there every day. The kids enjoyed it too…

Our first morning there, the kids were eager to go fishing, so we drove to Saranac Lake, which is where my grandmother was from. My uncle is an avid fisherman (as was my grandfather) and my husband Josh has always loved it too.

I wasn’t sure how the kids would respond when there were real worms and fish involved but surprisingly they loved it. Especially Hazel…she got really into it! And took it very seriously…

The fish were biting that day! We had a good laugh about Uncle Chris’ catch.

My uncle brought a booklet about Saranac Lake, from 1954, that belonged to my grandmother. I loved that.

It rained off and on while we were there, but was beautiful and peaceful no matter the weather.

We headed to Lake Placid to do some window shopping later in the afternoon when the rain stopped. I could have done that for hours! I was seriously in love with everything at Adirondack Decorative Arts & Crafts on Main St. Several of these shots were taken there…

Especially loved their chandeliers! I have had a thing for moose antlers since Christmas last year, so I kind of loved this one…

Owen loved the little bears…

All of the buildings and shops were full of rustic charm and we had a view of Mirror Lake and the mountains while we toured Main Street.

The rain came down for awhile on our last day, but eventually cleared just enough, so we could head to Whiteface Mountain. 

It was too foggy when we got there to really be able to enjoy the full view, so we decided not to ride the gondola up the mountain and instead, went to the place the kids had been waiting for: Santa’s Workshop. What a whimsical place! I took so many photos, I hope to share them in a future post.

After those adventures, we went back the cabin where my uncle and mom prepared dinner, we ate together, and then it was time to head home.

I was honestly sad to leave. There are so many things to see and do in the Adirondacks and spending only two and half days was not enough! I would definitely go back year after year. I can already tell…the mountains will be calling.
