Welcome to Seasons of Home Summer Edition 2014! I am thrilled to be sharing a botanical mantel vignette in my dining room with you today. Be sure to visit the other talented bloggers participating after you leave here!
I love changing out my mantel decor from season to season. This vignette was inspired by vintage scientific items that I have collected over the years. I have a growing collection of beakers and flasks, as well as a small microscope all purchased from thrift stores and yard sales.
I used the beakers and flasks as vases for flowers and leaves picked from my own yard. Many of my succulent plants were included in an eclectic mix of planters.
An insect identification plate from an old encyclopedia was nestled on one side, with my grandmother’s magnifying glass in front. I also incorporated her magnifying glass in my mantel for Seasons of Home Spring Edition earlier this year.
Unfortunately, my dining room gets the worst natural light, so I apologize for the graininess of the photographs. I have considered moving my mantel for this reason alone, but alas, living in a small home leaves limited spaces for it to fit. It is a beast of a mantel.
Antique physiology and biology books are stacked up under the microscope.
On top of the mantel, I chose to use an old printer’s drawer to hold a collection of seashells and the heart rocks that our family has collected over the past few years.
I also included an antique French botanical print.
My husband has these old motorcycle goggles with magnifying glasses on them (very “steampunk” which he is into). He insisted they fit into this mantel vignette, so I figured, what the heck? They are pretty cool, aren’t they?
I am so glad you came by! Now, head over to visit these other talented bloggers throughout the day to see their contributions to this edition of Seasons of Home!
